Astrolath

Astrolath is a continent I created for my very first Dungeons and Dragons campaign. Although it is being designed for a roleplaying game, it is an excellent outlet to exercise my skills in worldbuilding, linking storytelling to geographic reasoning, and practicing large-scale storytelling.

It is a medieval setting, on a continent whose cultures have been shaped by religious conflict and supernatural landscapes. Thousands of years ago, the desert of the Wound was a fertile land. Then the Scar rose along the rims of the region, stopping the rains from falling and leading the people of the continent to move East. As the Astrolathians spread across the eastern seaboard of the continent, they came upon a cavernous hole in the ground. One day during a new drought, this hole began spewing water into the air, leading the people of Astrolath to deem it The Well and pronounce it the gateway to the Gods Below. They worshipped the Well, and used its likeness as a central marker for all of their most developed cities. The Eclipsed Forest was named so since it was the only place where the shadow of the moon fell during the only solar eclipse in known history. During the Eclipse, a meteor fell from the sky into the Wound. Some brave explorers ventured to recover it, but found a mile-wide meteor. Believing this to be another sign from the gods, these explorers established the city of Sandwind as a base to construct a Colosseum around the meteor. The worship of these Gods Above created tension with the worshippers of the Gods Below, and the two societies became alienated.

Now, the players in this Dungeons and Dragons campaign are going to be placed into this world during a rare passage of their very slow moon. During the celebrations of this once-in-a-decade event, an attack on Waveport will lead the players into an epic quest to discover the culprits of the attack. Along the way, they will uncover tensions old and new between the worshippers of Gods Above and Below, discover cities full of mystery and powerful history, and perhaps even write their own pages in the history books of Astrolath. This project is still currently under development, but if you want any more information on Astrolath, contact me! This is a world intertwining geographical concepts with high fantasy to create an immersive experience for those who play the game, and hopefully even some outside of it.
